Mistakes Nine Out of Ten People Make When They Learn to Speak Chinese

Learning to speak Chinese is a tough task for many people. I have seen people taking Chinese classes for years, but their Chinese skills are still hardly improved. Why is it so difficult to improve the Chinese skills? In this article, you will find the mistakes that a lot of people make when they learn to speak Chinese or any other languages.

The first mistake is not willing to speak. I noticed this problem when I was teaching English, that some students always like to learn silently. When they read books, listened to tapes, they hardly spoke one word. A lot of them were because they didn't want to be embarrassed if they make mistakes. So they tend to not to speak when there was people around. Later on when I started to teach Chinese I also noticed this problem among my students. When there were people around them they hardly spoke one word in Chinese. No matter how hard you study, if you don't speak out it is not going to improve your Chinese very much. If you don't speak you can't communicate with people, and that is the purpose of learning a new language.

So don't worry about making mistakes. This is your second or third language. Everyone makes mistakes and even native Chinese speakers also make mistakes when they speak. It's just probably they make fewer mistakes then you. I remember when I was teaching in the total immersion English school, students made a saying about speaking out. It was "Don't be shy, just try; if you don't try, you will die."

Another mistake is people don't use Chinese in their life. Some students have been taking weekend class for quite a long time but still struggling with their Chinese skills. They go to class every weekend, but after the class they don't use it. The minute they walk out the classroom they immediately switch back to their native tongue. Learning Chinese is just like learn to ride bike or using other tools, they more you practice the more familiar you get with them. If you are not making progress about your Chinese skills, you can count how much time you actually spend on practicing it.

You need to use Chinese after your class as well. Apply this language into your life, try to watch TV or movie in Chinese, write notes for yourself in Chinese...etc. The most efficient way is to do things you like in Chinese language. My friend likes to play guitar, and when he was learning English he also started to learn guitar in English. He was never bored with English, because he was doing things he likes. This is called kill two birds with one stone.

These are the two major mistakes that slow people down. Try to avoid those mistakes will make it more efficient and joyful to learn to speak Chinese

Learn Chinese!

Why Learn Chinese?

Schools across the country and around the globe are now eagerly embracing Chinese programs, and not without reason! Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world. An understanding of the Chinese language and culture is an invaluable asset, especially for students preparing to enter a rapidly changing global marketplace. China currently supports the second largest economy in the world, and learning to speak Chinese is a great way to give you and your children an advantage in the increasingly competitive business world.

In addition to increased business opportunities, an understanding of the Chinese language and culture opens up many more opportunities for traveling. With nearly five-thousand years of history, China is home to several awe-inspiring landmarks: the legendary Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army, the Three Gorges Dam and, more recently, the Beijing Olympic Marvels, to name a few. Beijing and Shanghai have recently undergone several renovations that are increasing the tourism industry every day. In the summer of 2010, Shanghai will be hosting Expo 2010 exhibitions.

Finally, it is always great to learn another language. Chinese is not a Germanic language, so it is fun and exciting to wrap your mind around a completely different system of reading and writing.

How do I get started?

The easiest way to get started is to begin taking classes at a local Chinese school. In fact, most Chinese schools offer bilingual or adult programs. While there are plenty of classes for native Chinese speakers who wish to improve their current speaking, reading, and writing ability, there are also excellent courses offered to non-native speakers. While you are at it, why not also enroll in a Chinese dance or martial arts class? In addition to language courses, a wide variety of extracurricular classes are available, ranging from Chinese yo-yo to painting.

How to Learn Chinese Tones!

For speakers studying Mandarin, learning the tones can be quite the challenge. Mandarin has 4 tones, and one neutral tone; This means that one word can have a variety of meanings based on the way you say it. The Mandarin word "ma" for example can mean mom, hemp, horse, scold or indicate a question depending on what tone is used! Being such a foreign concept, how can you learn tones without hours of meaningless repetition?

The first answer is simple, you need to understand that even in English we use tones all the time! We may not realize it, but by putting a different intonation on the exact same word we can have a variety of meanings!

Take the word "yeah" for example. Our tones on it are very similar to the Chinese tones!

1. A Mandarin first tone is a high level and neutral pitch. Try saying "yeah" just a little higher than your normal voice, and also keep it the same pitch. What did that sound like? If you were to say that in a conversation what would you be expressing? In English a high level neutral pitched "yeah" indicates doubt. Its like saying "I see what you are saying, but I'm not sure." And we get all of that out of just saying "yeah!"

2. A Mandarin second tone is rising tone - you start your voice low and it comes higher. Say "yeah" with a voice lower than your normal voice level, then immediately rise it just a bit above your normal voice level. When you do this with "yeah" you usually are saying either "really? That's interesting."

3. A Mandarin third tone is a falling first, then rising tone. Say "yeah" starting high, then bring it down, then bring it back up. What does this mean in English? In a conversation most of the time it would mean "you are right, but what's your point?"

4. The Mandarin fourth tone is a falling tone. Imagine you are upset at someone and they just asked you a question you thought was a dumb question so you answer "yeah." Start a bit high then drop fast. In this case Yeah simply means yes, but with it you are also indicating that the person should have known better then to ask that question.

The reality is that Chinese is not that much different from our own language. Tones are a little foreign, but understanding we use them in some cases as well can further your understanding. The major difference is that their tones are assigned to EVERY word, whereas we use them selectively.

One more thing to point out, you can't simply not worry about tones and assume people with understand you. As your language ability increases so do the importance of tones. One of the best things you can do to hear and understand tones is get practice with a native speaker or advanced level student of Chinese.

I would recommend checking out my website http://www.cafespeak.com where you can use Skype to meet with a native speaker of a language. In the meantime, keep working on those tones!

So You Want To Learn Chinese?

Now that you have decided to learn a second language, you are on your way to being bilingual...and who knows, in the future, a polyglot. If you want to learn Chinese, you have to brace yourself with the many options that are available. As there are many ways to approach learning Chinese, ask yourself what aspect do you want to study first. Do you want to start with writing Chinese scripts? Would you like to learn simple words and practical conversational phrases? If you have a previous background in Mandarin, then you probably would like to take your learning to another level. Advanced classes may entail mastery of Chinese grammar, song or poem writing, and even business Mandarin.

In any case, if you are really serious about it, you have to invest a part of your time in this endeavor. It will be ideal if you enroll in a nearby language school that offers Mandarin classes, from beginner to advanced level. Being in a group of people may motivate you to learn as you may practice the day's lessons with fellow classmates. This is especially useful if you are interested in spoken Chinese.

Writing on the other hand will need more effort on your part as Chinese script has varied stylized strokes, combination, and spacing. The Roman alphabet is very far from Chinese characters. In reality, the Chinese language doesn't have any alphabet but instead uses symbols as characters. Pinyin is systematically used instead to translate Chinese characters to Roman alphabet.

While the mastery of Chinese writing may take some time, you may opt to fast-track your Chinese lessons with common, practical Chinese phrases and sentences. In a day, you can already say the following: "Shi de." (Yes.); "Nihao ma?" (How are you?); "Ni jiao shen meh mingzi?" (What's your name?); "Wo hen hao. Xiexie." (I'm very good. Thank you.). But before you get ahead of yourself, remember that getting your tones right is just as important as familiarizing yourself with the word. The meaning of a word or a phrase may depend a great deal on how you pronounce it. The best thing to do is listen carefully how each word is enunciated.

Your apparent goal-whether you want to start learning the Chinese script first, speaking the language right away, or both-will determine how much time and effort you'll have to spend in studying them. If you have the luxury of time and money, getting a personalized Chinese tutor is an option. However, if you are just interested in learning Chinese as a leisure pursuit, then the world-wide web has a lot of free lessons to offer. In just a few minutes, you may already learn at least 10 basic words a day. After two weeks of daily study, you may have memorized at least 140 Chinese words. After that, you may start with simple phrases and sentences. It is not that difficult. Consistency coupled with determination can make an intermediate Chinese speaker of you. Now isn't that encouraging?

Why Chinese is an Easy Language to Learn

People talk a lot about the difficulties of learning Chinese, but they rarely examine why Chinese can be a very easy language to learn.

However, Chinese is a much simpler language than English, French, or Spanish in a number of ways. It is hard to explain until you dive in and experience it for yourself, but Chinese is very straightforward. Unlike English, it rarely breaks its own rules.

Do you remember learning your spelling in grade school? "I before E except after C?" English is full of different little rules that sometimes have thousands of exceptions. As an English teacher, I really discovered how difficult it is to explain English to Chinese people. They're baffled by the nonsense of it.

Think of this: What is the difference between "overlook" and "oversee"? Oversee means to monitor and direct something, while overlook means to miss or neglect something. They mean the opposite, while "look" and "see" mean almost the same thing. Chinese rarely does this.

If you've learned French, Spanish, or other European languages than you're familiar with the frustration of verb conjugation. If the only language you speak is English, you may have no idea how complicated your language is. Consider this - I am writing, I wrote, I have written, I will write, are all forms of the same verb, and it's necessary to memorize this in order to learn it. In Chinese, this is much simpler. Past, present, and future tense are easy to express with rules that have very few exceptions.

Chinese cuts out all of the articles that are in English. As English speakers, we're constantly injecting words into sentences, like "the" "a", "an" etc. Chinese doesn't have these, and you'll find that they're really unnecessary. Chinese even cuts "is" out of most sentences. Instead of saying "I am hungry", you can say "I hungry" and get the same meaning.

The result is - Chinese trims the fat off language. There are fewer rules, and fewer exceptions to those rules. Chinese grammar is uncomplicated, and so the major challenges that face students of Chinese language are vocabulary and pronunciation, both of which come easily with steady practice.

It is easy to focus on the differences between Chinese and English, but few people stop to notice the similarities that make things easy. English and Chinese are both subject verb object (SVO) languages. Sentences like "I kick the ball" run in the same order, while other languages switch it around (ball kick I, Kick ball I, I ball kick, etc).

So there's no reason to be intimidated by Chinese. It is classified as one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn, but that's an imaginary barrier. Some parts are harder, but many parts are MUCH easier. So take advantage of this, and dive in.

How To Learn Chinese: Language Learning Strategies For Linguistic Learners

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences emerged out of contemporary cognitive research, research that studied how humans get to know the world, how we solve problems, and how we come to understand our own actions and the actions of those around us. Specifically, the research showed that people learn, primarily, in seven distinct ways, visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, and logical-mathematical. When using this theory to design your personal Chinese language learning strategy, it is important to note that every person, including you, uses every intelligence, to some degree. This particular article will present useful Chinese language learning strategies for those who are strong linguistic learners.

What Are Linguistic Learners

Linguistic learners are people who are great at using words. They display highly developed auditory skills, and they typically think in words, as opposed to other types of learners who think in more abstract or emotional ways. They enjoy playing word games and reading and writing stories. They learn best when they are encouraged to see and say words, which means reading is a very effective way for them to learn.

Learning Strategy 1

As words have a strong impact on your mind, traditional flashcards are a great tool for you. Just write a Chinese vocabulary word on one side of a card and the English equivalent on the other. Be sure that you write the words in large, clear type, as it is the visual impression of the individual letters, as well as the word as a whole, that stimulates your brain. Spend an hour a day with these flash cards and you will be well on your way to developing a deep and usable Chinese language vocabulary.

Learning Strategy 2

If you are a linguistic learner, you will love to read, and not only will you love it, but you will be good at learning from it. Due to this, you should start out reading books written in Chinese from day one. In the beginning, you can get story books that were written for children. The vocabulary is simple and easy to learn but very useful. As you progress, you can choose books that are more difficult to read, until, eventually, you will be able to read a Chinese newspaper. In addition, look for sets of story books that have been converted into Chinese language learning textbooks. They are numerous and include comprehension questions and vocabulary games.

Learning Strategy 3

Linguistic learners often enjoy writing as much as they do reading, and, again, this is an activity that helps them learn. If you're a linguistic learner, first build up your vocabulary using flash cards. Then read as many books as you can, and, finally, begin writing your own stories and poems using the Chinese language. Obviously, they will be very simple at first, but the combination of memorizing, reading, and writing will forge a path of learning that will allow you to pick up Chinese quickly and easily.

Learning Strategy 4

Of course, the goal of studying a language is to develop the ability to communicate with it verbally, and you need to practice this skill a lot. For linguistic learners this is not difficult. You can write your own speeches in Chinese and then recite them. You can speak with your classmates, join language learning groups, or use Skype to find an online language learning partner. The particular methods you choose are not that important, as you have the ability to use any of them. Just make sure that you don't neglect this part of the learning process, focusing only on reading and writing.

Summary

Using Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences is a powerful way to design your personal Chinese language learning strategy. When using it, you must understand that the particular learning styles best for you are the ones that you will gravitate towards naturally. In addition, you must understand that you can, and should, use more than one style. Finally, only you can decide which learning styles are best for you.

Linguistic learners are people who like and relate to words, and, as such, they should plan to use them heavily when developing a Chinese language learning strategy. If you are a linguistic learner, spend your time reading, writing and memorizing words, but be careful not to neglect the speaking practice you need in order to become a well-spoken learner of Mandarin Chinese.

3 Step Guide to Easily Learn Chinese Online

Mandarin Chinese is one of, if not the, hardest language to learn. To learn it easily, you should try to set up a plan that will help you complete everything by a particular date. In this article I will tell you 3 steps that should help you learn mandarin Chinese quickly and efficiently.

STEP 1- The first step that you should do is figure out when you need to completely learn all of the information. It is possible to learn everything in 2 weeks, but it is more reasonable to plan to learn everything one month away from when you start.

Step 2- Next you should p-lan how much work you would like to do each day. I would spend about one hour each week night and two ours each weekend dedicated solely on learning to speak Mandarin Chinese online. You may need to add more time or take away time depending on when you would like to complete this. For example, if their are 30 sections that take an hour to complete each, and you would like to finish in thirty days, you should complete one section a night.

Step 3- At the end of each week you should plan to take a quiz on EVERYTHING that you learned from that week. Just simply have someone that you know have a quiz waiting for you after each week. This will help you figure out what subjects you had trouble with and what you already know. If you have trouble with a certain subject, just add it to next weeks task-list.

Choosing the correct product will also play a big role in whether you actually learn to speak Mandarin Chinese online or not. To learn about the #1 product for people looking to learn Chinese, click on the link below.

Learn to Speak Chinese - Why Everyone I Know is Learning Chinese

I was at a birthday party the other evening and I was talking to a lady at my table named Sue. I noted that she was very intelligent with vibrant conversational skills. What a fun person to talk to. I thought this was wonderful for a person in her mid-70's.

Sue asked me, "Are you learning Chinese?" I said, "No, I am not learning it. Why do you ask?" She said, "Everyone I know is learning Chinese." She then asked me what courses in Chinese we had. I told her that we sold Pimsleur Chinese Mandarin Courses and Pimsleur Cantonese Courses. She wanted to know which was more popular Cantonese or Mandarin.

I said to her, "Why are all of your friends learning Chinese?" She had several friends going to Beijing on a trip, another going to Shanghai to see friends, and another one going to Hong Kong and then to Guizhou. All of these friends were trying to learn some Chinese so they could talk to people in China. This was impressive to think about all of these, probably older, people learning it.

I was in China a year ago and found it to be a fascinating place. I went through a candy factory that was just immaculate. I watched the workers decorate candy eggs, rabbits, and just about any kind of candy you can think of. The people that worked at the facility lived in apartments owned and supplied by the owners of the company. They signed contracts each year and were given their jobs, food and living quarters. The contracts were for a year at a time.

They made all kinds of candy with intricate details. It was like watching an artist paint to see them decorate the candies. From my hotel room I could see large cranes as far as the eye could see all putting up tall buildings. I found that China leases the majority of cranes in the world. They are a country on the move and very industrious.

Shanghai has some of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. They have a bullet train that goes up to 250 miles per hour. I talked to a couple from Israel that has lived there for many years and just loves it. I asked them when they would move back home and they told me that they were not sure that they would ever move back. They loved living in Shanghai and had a very nice life style.

How to Go About Learning Chinese

The immense growth that Chinese has witnessed in recent times has propelled many people the world over to learn Chinese. However what confounds most persons trying to learn Chinese is how they can go about doing so. Already the United States is witnessing a shortfall in Chinese teachers as the demand to learn Chinese touches a historic high.

In this case it is recommended that a person beginning to learn Chinese start with the Pinyin format. Pinyin was developed in China as a Romanization of the Chinese language and is now the official Mandarin Romanization of China and Singapore and is also recognized by the American Library Association, and the US Library of Congress. In Pinyin the need to learn the Chinese characters is removed so that the student can focus on the tones and pronunciation.

This is one of the most important steps into learning Chinese as the tones form an important part of it. For instance mà (spoken with a falling tone) is meant for scolding or expressing negative emotion, má (spoken with a rising tone) means hemp. All in all, Mandarin Chinese has four tones which determine the meaning of a word. As can be seen a good effort will be needed to understand these tones.

However merely understanding the tones is insufficient to understand written Chinese. Hence it is recommended that after a student has gained some understanding of the spoken form, he/she start to learn its written form as well as it is during the initial period that a student has the greatest ability to learn it.

Learn Chinese Song Lyrics - Study Mandarin in a Relaxing Way

Music is a powerful tool for language learning. It motivates language learners and develops language skills. As an experienced Mandarin teacher and an amateur Chinese singer, I often record my own mp3 songs in my spare time and share them with my friends. I translated the lyrics of my favorite Chinese songs and teach them to my students. They are very interested in singing these songs since it is not only helpful to their language learning but also helps them learn about Chinese culture and customs, the history and the people. Here are some sound reasons to hum a little Chinese tune when you are learning it:

Listening to Song Lyrics Improves Comprehension Skills

If you have ever tried to figure out the lyrics to a Chinese song whenever you hear it, you know that careful listening is required.

Singing Songs Develops Good Pronunciation

Music lends a natural rhythm to words and phrases, helping language learners use good pronunciation. Melodies and rhymes guide learners to speak in a native cadence. Any Chinese learner can follow a Chinese song to model correct pronunciation.

Singing Songs Increases Vocabulary and Speech Patterns

Songs automatically put language into a context. Chinese learners will begin to pick up vocabulary and complex expressions they might not otherwise come across. Some Chinese songs can be used to teach specific vocabulary.

Music Aids Memory

Some Chinese songs can help learners memorize grammar and vocabulary.

Music Brings Culture Alive

Traditional songs and rhymes offer a wealth of cultural heritage. Just think about the history of a Chinese song that goes back generations and generations. There are songs associated with holidays, places, and times gone by.

Music is Fun

Sing a beautiful Chinese song livens up learning. When you are having fun, you are more motivated to learn. Sing, sing, sing! Motivate yourself to study Chinese as a foreign language with music!

Learn Chinese Online - Mandarin Chinese Made Easy With an Intelligent Learning Approach

To learn Chinese online is the best choice for learning Chinese. And if you want to learn Chinese, Mandarin Chinese is generally the best choice.

Let's discuss why Mandarin Chinese is the best choice first. While there an many, many dialects spread throughout Mainland China, more than half of the indigenous population uses the Mandarin dialect. It is generally recognized as the official language, so more and more people are speaking it or a variation of it which is understandable to other speakers of the dialect.

There are also nearly fifty million speakers of Mandarin Chinese outside of China. Whether your reason to learn Chinese is for work or for pleasure, chances are that you will get more value out of your effort if you choose to learn Mandarin rather than one of the many other dialects.

Like other languages such as Korean, written Chinese makes the language look daunting to learn. Characters in Chinese are grouped in two distinct sets - simplified and traditional. Surprisingly, it is the simplified characters which are used on the Mainland, while places like Hong Kong and Taiwan use the traditional version.

It is easiest to learn spoken Mandarin first, and then move on to learn written Chinese. For this you will find Pinyins useful, even if your approach is to learn Chinese online. What are Pinyins? Think of them as helpful for pronunciation, as they essentially present the characters in a Western form to help you grasp pronunciation.

When you learn Chinese online, your best approach is to choose a Mandarin Chinese course which has extensive audio modules. These will give you exposure in audio format to complete sentences, and this helps in two ways.

First, it gives you a sense early on for sentence structure. It also gets you to achieve great progress with pronunciation. Mandarin Chinese is a very tonal language, and the tone with which you express a syllable changes its meaning. There are five tones including a neutral tone.

That is what makes it so hard to learn unless you choose to learn Chinese online. Daily exposure (which you will not get in a classroom) is essential because of the tonal nuances of pronunciation.

And that is the key to the success that can be achieved if you choose to learn Chinese online. Daily practice in a guided fashion along with immersion in sentence structure and pronunciation! These combined are powerful tools for success.

The Ways to Teach the Children Outside China to Learn Chinese

1. You must encourage your child to speak Chinese. Family is the most important place for a child to learn Chinese and it is a place parents can do something. No matter whether the parents' Chinese pronunciation is standard or not, they must try to talk to their child in Chinese. Make sure that you don't waste this language resource that you can originally make use of it and don't let your child lose this language environment to learn Chinese.

Chinese is a foreign language for the children who live overseas. Family language environment is their main advantage. Speaking Chinese can improve a child's listening comprehension, increase his language sense and enlarge his vocabulary. The best and effective way to learn vocabulary is to create Chinese language environment, to persist in speaking Chinese with you child. This is easy thing for our Chinese families.

We should understand: That most children don't speak Chinese is not because they hate Chinese. The children learn a lot of knowledge from English and they don't know how to express it in Chinese. Their vocabulary is too small, so speaking Chinese is very tired for them. I think this is the reason they are not willing to speak Chinese. If the parents can turn speaking Chinese into a part of children's life, then the Chinese vocabulary and comprehension and expressing abilities will increase when they are growing.

2. You must enlighten your child to love Chinese.

Someone has ever said, "Chinese is the most beautiful and intelligent language in the world; English is the most useful and convenient language." How to enlighten children to love Chinese is a common responsibility for teachers and parents. Parents can turn speaking Chinese into a part of children's life rather than a drudgery in daily family life; teacher can turn the classroom into a game entertainment center in class, making Chinese school no more a frightening place.

If parents can find suitable reading material for their children and cultivate their correct study attitude, I believe the children will love to learn Chinese. In a word, the time for children to learn Chinese is really not so much. They study in Chinese school for two hours a week, and possible only two hours at home. If they do homework for one hour, there is only a hour for reading. But if they persist in reading a hour a week, day after day, they will make achievement in Chinese learning. I Was Going to Learn Chinese But I Have to Learn Texting First - Bummer?

When we listen to the media in China, they keep telling us that the recession is over and they've had over 6% growth rate this year in their GDP. Personally, I don't believe it, I believe it to be more like 4.25% by my calculations, and I'm quite worried about the fact that they are giving too many loans, and thus see a problem with their economy overheating, and inflationary risks with the Yuan.

Nevertheless, there are many people, such as the famous investor Jim Rogers, who coincidentally wrote the book "A Bull in China; Investing Profitably in the World's Greatest Market," and "Investment Biker; on the Road with Jim Rogers," who believe that the Chinese economy will continue to grow and eventually surpass that of the United States of America, which as you know, our GDP is at around $17 trillion per year as soon as the market returns.

It may not be until 2035 or 2040 until China catches us in GDP, as we are also slowly expanding, well provided everything goes right for them. It is for this reason that I need to learn Chinese, and it makes sense that anyone who plans on doing business in that country learn the language. Unfortunately, there is also a new language that our teenagers are speaking, and these millennials are starting to enter the workforce. The characters of their new language are just is frightening as learning 45,000 Chinese symbols.

The new language that our teens and millennials are using is called; "Texting" and the best way to learn is by doing it; meaning that you have to spend hours each day sending text messages, meaningless gibberish to all of your friends to learn it correctly. Once you do this, you are cool enough to do business with the teens and millennials who claim that they are one of the greatest up-and-coming demographics. We will see, but first it's time to start learning this new language. Please consider this.

Learning Chinese: Mission Impossible

Trying to learn Chinese can be a difficult task at the best of times. The fact is that it is just one of those languages which is particularly challenging for us Westerners. Chinese has two primary dialects Mandarin and Cantonese, which correspond with Northern and Southern regions. Urban and Rural areas and also generations can vary further in dialect, but for the sake of our sanity and not to intimidate anyone who wants to learn Chinese, let’s just say there are only two dialects!

In my experience there is generally a gap in typical language between grandparents and grandchildren. And this is not just a small discrepancy, we are talking words which are not even found in the dictionary of the language you are learning, but are commonly known amongst the locals.

Dialects aside there are many other issues which contribute to the complexities of learning the Chinese language. First of all consider the alphabet of the Chinese language. You will begin your lessons in Chinese looking at and perfecting the styles of the letters in the Chinese alphabet. Yes that’s right, you don’t get just get a simple A - B - C, the Chinese have a whole host of new symbols for you to learn, each more complex and insane than the last. If this is too much for you then some classes are designed to let you use the English alphabet and learn Chinese by spelling phonetically, but [http://www.learn2bchinese.com] advises that his can be problematic. It may seem like a good corner to cut and you will obviously be able to speak more fluently in less time, but you will also be unable to tell the difference between a male and female rest room!

The Chinese are also very particular about the composition the approximately 3000 characters that are commonly used in modern Chinese society. A great deal of time is spent by Chinese children ensuring that their characters are written with meticulous precision. A certain pride in ones country and customs is found in the Chinese way which you just won’t see in the English language. Much of this is due to fact that some characters are in fact pictorial symbols of their meaning. These nuances that one finds when exploring other cultures can be fascinating and tend to make learning Chinese a very rewarding experience.

Once you’ve perfected the art of the Chinese alphabet, its time to start considering the sounds of the language. As a former exchange student, I don’t believe that it is impossible to eliminate an accent as I have come across a number of people from a range of different cultures who have mastered the art of their chosen language, without even a glimmer of an accent. Listen carefully when learning Chinese so that you are able to pick up on the sounds that the native Chinese person makes and also where they place the emphasis on their words, as this is the key in perfecting your accent. This way you will have a better chance of being successful in your attempt to learn Chinese.

Why is it Important to Learn Chinese?

Surprisingly to a lot of people, English is not the most spoken language in the world. To some of us, that really is not a big surprise. What is the most spoken language then? Shockingly enough, it is the Chinese language. About 932,132,000 people speak and write Chinese, while only 332,000,000 speak and write English. (Meanwhile, Spanish takes second place.) This is why it is so important to learn how to speak Chinese. In this article, you will learn why and how you should learn how to speak Chinese.

If you live in America, then you know there is an influx of people coming from other countries. Most of these people have travelled from Asian countries. You will see this mostly in the cities, but more are settling into

small towns as well. Just like anyone else, they want to raise their kids in a well-respected neighbourhood.

With the onward boom of both Spanish and Asian people, American(and other nationalities) are required to learn a different language. This is one of the reasons why you may have to learn Chinese. What if you work in the health care industry and you are tending to a patient who does not understand English? Most likely, they are in an emergency situation and will need your help. But how are you going to communicate with them?

You may need to learn Chinese for other reasons as well. Foreign exchange students have become popular over the past few years. What if your son or daughter brings one home from an Asian country? How is your family going to communicate with that student while making them feel comfortable? This is where you may need to learn some Chinese. Even a few phrases would help ease the situation.

This could also be for the ever important business man who constantly travels. What if he has to go to a foreign country? What if he has to attend a meeting in Hong Kong? If he is not familiar with the Chinese or Asian culture, he is likely not going to get anywhere with them.

This is why it is so important. You may never know when you might have to pick up on the language. Of course, learning to speak and write Chinese takes years of practice. Just learning the Chinese alphabet alone, could take most of your life! But there are some methods can help get you started.

You could learn in the comfort of your own home with online programs and Rosetta Stone. You can study a variety of languages from the Rosetta Stone software. It has proven to be an effective way of picking up a new language. You can even learn Chinese at a community college. Most colleges will have courses on languages such as Chinese, and will only cost you a couple hundred dollars. From point of view, home tuition is the best way to master Chinese, you can hire a Chinese home tutor to start a Chinese tuition at you preferred location. Now you know why and how you should learn Chinese. This is more important than most people think. English is not the most popular language, nor has it ever been. It's best to broaden yourself to other cultures and languages. It'll show how much you respect everyone.

Learn Chinese Easy With Vocabulary You Like

It is very easy to become lost in the middle of a language learning program. Of the people who will purchase a language course, the majority will not finish it. They lose interest. Anyone can learn Chinese easy, but language is only as easy as you make it. If you can approach a language learning project with interest and enthusiasm you stand a much better chance of finishing it.

Those who want to learn Chinese easy should think about two things when deciding on the vocabulary that they will learn. The first consideration the frequency with which words appear in the language. If you learn only 300 words in Chinese, but they are the 300 most frequently occurring words, you have likely already learned half of what appears in Chinese speech. Surprisingly, the same is true of English. It is a great idea to begin with basic vocabulary like this, and it will take you further as you practice conversational Chinese.

When you have mastered a vocabulary of 300-500 words, it is time for you to expand your knowledge of nouns and adjectives in order to gain a greater ability to express yourself. The best idea is not to learn the words that are most used at this point, but to learn words that interest you. Think about the conversations that you have with your friends in English. Think about your hobbies, job, and interests. Learn vocabulary that will help you to express this in Chinese. You can learn Chinese easy if you're interested in expressing something close to you, but it is much more difficult to learn a foreign language in order to express something that you have no interest in.

Learning Chinese should not feel like hitting your head against a wall. Nor should it seem like an endless process of repeating phrases. The sooner that you are able to express concepts that interest you, the sooner you will find a sense of joy in your language interactions. Language is a creative force and not a derivative one. The sooner you are able to become creative and spontaneous in your use of language, the sooner you will feel that surge of confidence that lets you know you have reached a higher level. You can learn Chinese easy by surrounding yourself with vocabulary that interests you.

1. Focus on the important parts - You don't need to know how to introduce your great-grandmother right off the bat. Instead, focus on survival phrases that include introductions and basic directions.

2. Learn to speak before you read - You'll be much better off if you can ask someone what a certain character means than if you can't communicate with the people around you.

3. Listen to native speakers - Use an audio program that features native speakers. You'll be much more likely to pick up on important inflections that will help Chinese people understand you.

4. Practice regularly - Cramming a new language all at once works about as well as it did in college - you'll be lucky if you retain anything! Instead, set aside a regular time to practice for at least a half hour each day and you'll quickly and easily learn Chinese fast.

5. Start using the language as quickly as possible - Before you've even left your native soil, find Chinese speakers to practice your skills with. Literacy programs in your area can help you find practice partners, or you can find Chinese speakers looking to brush up their English online. You'll mess up and sound silly, but you'll improve much faster this way.

Tips on How to Learn Chinese Quickly

Are you looking for some tips on how to learn Chinese quickly? If so, read on, because you are in the right place. In this article I'm going to show you three tips that will greatly help you learn Chinese quickly. Here they are!

1. Get some help of a native speaker... for free

Use sites for language learners, such as Italki, Livemocha or Polyglot Learn Language, to look for native Chinese speakers who want to learn your native language in exchange for some help with Chinese. You can speak with them on Skype or simply exchange e-mails.

It's an excellent way to not only learn a language quickly, but also make friends all over the world. You can make a few friends and speak with them every single day - it will tremendously improve your Chinese within a very short time, because it will be like total immersion in a language at home.

2. Live through Chinese

Many people still believe that they can learn a language in a class. They are completely wrong. There were no language schools 100 or 200 years ago (or at least they weren't as popular as nowadays) and people somehow managed to learn foreign languages. How? They were just immersing themselves in a language.

Nowadays, you can watch movies, TV series, listen to the radio, music, podcasts, write to a pen pal, speak with a language partner on Skype, read books, websites, blogs, start a journal in Chinese on Lang-8.com, write short journal entries and have them proofread by native speakers for free.

3. Travel or move to China

Okay, if you can travel for a few weeks or move to China, then it's the best way to learn a language quickly. It's very easy to learn a language if you live in a country in which it's spoken.

However, you won't improve your Chinese skills if you are going to use your native language. Forget about your mother tongue and try to speak only Chinese, even if you know only a few basic words and phrases. Learn like a child and don't be afraid of making mistakes.

That's it - three tips on how to learn Chinese quickly. Keep in mind that it doesn't mean that you will become a fluent Chinese speaker after a few weeks. It will probably take you a few years to achieve this goal, or a year or two if you practice for a few hours daily. It depends on you and your priorities. Good luck!

Chinese Language Lessons For Beginners - Is It Hard To Learn Chinese?

Frequently I have heard my students or anyone who is interested in learning Mandarin complaining: "Learning Chinese language is so hard, I can't even pronounce properly and the characters are complicated compare to English." Yes I agree that Chinese is hard, but the hardest thing I found is to get the learning process started effectively, and achieve a good foundation of basic knowledge and skills. Then once a student is on the right track, learning Chinese becomes much easier the more you study.

May I suggest some key ideas to make things easier for the first time learners?

First of all, for the basics, there are 4 tones in Mandarin Chinese, and each character needs to pronounce with 1 of these 4 tones. Without knowing this, pronouncing Chinese can be very difficult. If you want to master the pronunciations of Chinese characters, then learning and practicing the tones is one of the keys.

Second, the pronunciations of Mandarin Chinese language are represented with alphabets written in Latin, which is called Pinyin. That's why so many people find Chinese names written in English hard to pronounce, because you need to pronounce them as Latin instead. So the hard part is actually to remember the Latin pronunciations of English letters, and use them to pronounce each and every Chinese character with the tones, when they are written in Pinyin.

The Chinese characters themselves are unable to be pronounced directly, because they were evolved into a language from ancient drawings in the last 5000 years. To pronounce a Chinese character, you must know its Pinyin - alphabets written in Latin letters, together with its tones. And then when you memorize a Chinese character, you need to remember what it looks like, how does it pronounce with the correct tone, and what does it mean. This may sound hard at the beginning, but with practice, you can easily increase the speed to 10 characters per day. I would suggest learning the characters in the form of words and sentences, so that you can relate and practice what you have learned immediately, even if you are learning at the speed of 1 sentence per day. If you persist the learning process long enough, eventually you will be able to master more than 2000 Chinese characters in a year's time, or in other words, 300 sentences, which is enough for basic everyday conversations.

In terms of writing Chinese characters, I would recommend not to pursuit this skill at the beginning. The reason being that: unless this skill is absolutely needed, you can type Chinese characters on a computer using Pinyin, which is much easier. However, to learn the writing skills, you will need to study the components and the structures of Chinese characters first, and then practice the hand writing on paper. This can increase your efforts of learning Chinese tremendously, and can take years of dedication to master the skill. While we are living in a digital age now, learning to type Chinese characters is much easier and more effective.

If you have gone this far and spend all the efforts to learn and practice Chinese language, then things become much easier for you. All you need to do is learn more Chinese characters each and every day, and practice them when you have a chance. The grammar in Mandarin is much simpler compare to English; all you need is to put the characters together in a proper way to form a sentence. Finally, I wish you have a great experience learning Chinese language, and maintain a long term substantial passion and efforts for your study.

Learn Chinese Fast With Conversational Mandarin Chinese

If you want to learn Chinese fast start off with conversational Mandarin Chinese.

Mandarin Chinese is one of the Chinese or Sinitic languages. These languages are spoken by more than one fifth of the world's population. That adds up to more than one billion people.

It is not exactly known how many dialects there are in Chinese. In fact even the term 'dialect' is controversial. Some of the so-called dialects are in fact regional languages spoken by tens of millions of people.

Even the number of main language groups is disputed. According to Wikipedia, "There are between seven and thirteen main regional groups of Chinese (depending on classification scheme), of which the most spoken, by far, is Mandarin (about 850 million), followed by Wu (90 million), Min (70 million) and Cantonese (70 million)."

So how is it possible to learn Chinese fast?

First, the beginner Chinese language student should study conversational Mandarin Chinese, not just Chinese. The standard form of spoken Chinese is Mandarin and is based on the Beijing dialect.

This standard form of Mandarin is surprisingly simple. For example Standard Mandarin has only 400 basic syllables. How many syllables do you think the English language has?

The English language has so many syllables they've never been counted. The estimate is tens of thousands.

Mandarin like all Chinese languages or dialects is tonal. Mandarin is the simplest of them all and has only four tones.

Because of the tones you can't really learn Chinese fast or even at all solely from a book. You will need a tutor or an interactive audio course to progress rapidly.

Another tip to learn Chinese fast is to practice your conversational Mandarin Chinese. Practicing a new language as much as you can is without doubt the number one way to accelerate your learning.

Practicing at home is a great way to start off, but if you need to learn Chinese fast, speaking with and listening to other Chinese speakers will help you really move along. That's why it is best to start with conversational Mandarin Chinese. Being able to say hello and ask someone a question will not only lift your confidence, it will give you real world practice.
